Samsung launches enormous 18.4-inch Galaxy View tablet

With smartphone screens growing larger and nearing what used to be tablet territory, it's probably natural that the latter are increasing screen size as well. Apple launched the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in September and now Samsung, which already has the 12.2-inch Galaxy Tab Pro in its line-up, has gone one step further and launched the gigantic Galaxy View with an 18.4-inch display.

Considering its dimensions and 2.65kg weight the Galaxy View looks like a television/tablet hybrid and arguably wasn't designed to be carried around in a bag or used handheld. It comes with an integrated stand on its back that allows you to prop it up at two different angles which, in combination with the relatively low 1080p screen resolution (123ppi), indicates that the Galaxy is meant to be a device for passive content consumption from a distance rather than a laptop replacement.

Inside of the device a Samsung Exynos 7580 chipset with 1.6GHz octa-core CPU and 2GB of RAM is powering the Android 5.1 operating system with Samsung skin. Either 32 or 64GB of internal storage can be expanded via a built-in MicroSD slot and above the display you'll find a 2.1MP camera for video-conferencing. There are also dual 4W stereo speakers and, according to Samsung, the 5700mAh battery can provide up to 8 hours of continuous video playback.

The Samsung Galaxy View will be available as a Wi-Fi only model or an LTE version with nano-SIM slot. No official pricing information has been released yet.
